Six Championship Belts Among Prized Items from World Renowned Boxing Collection to be Auctioned by
Geppi's Memorabilia Road Show in October
Six historic championship belts, dating back to the 19th century, are among the prized artifacts included in
the world renowned boxing collection of Stanley Weston and Toby Weston Cone, to be auctioned by Geppi’s
Memorabilia Road Show in October.
The collection is considered the largest to come to the market in a single auction, and for a long time, a
significant portion of it comprised the Boxing Hall of Fame in the old Madison Square Garden in New York City.
It was curated by the late Stanley Weston, the illustrator and publisher who was long associated with The Ring
Magazine, and his daughter Toby Weston Cone.
The "gem" of the belts is the championship belt won by "Jem" (James) Mace, the great 19th
century British boxing champion, considered the first significant boxer to embrace the Marquess of Queensberry
rules of boxing. This was the world middleweight championship belt presented to Mace when he defeated Sam Hurst
for the title. It is sterling silver with a lion on the back panel and four figures to the left and right panels,
with the front panel inscribed.
Also in the collection is the Police Gazette Belt, the lightweight championship belt of the Asiastic Continent,
won by Richard K. Fox of New York; the Erbito Salvarria Ring Magazine Championship Belt, won by the flyweight in
Thailand in 1970; a 1920 Sterling Championship Belt awarded to welterweight champ Willie Farrell; The Ring Magazine
Championship Belt won by flyweight champion Efren Torres of Mexico City in 1969; and the Rocky Kansas Championship
Belt, presented to the lightweight champion Rocky Kansas in 1926 from the Boxing Writers Association of New York.
The belts are lavish, striking and historic, and are already gaining international attention.
The auction, by phone, fax and email, will also include the Bert Padell Collection, one of the largest single
consignor auctions since Barry Halper, the Arthur Richman Collection, from the longtime sportswriter and club
executive, and consignments from Orioles great Brooks Robinson. The boxing portion concludes October 25, the
remainder on the 27th.
